How to sign a PDF online, free

Signing a PDF takes about thirty seconds and nothing to install. This page works like iLovePDF's sign tool, except the file stays in your browser. Click where the signature belongs and type your name — the finished PDF downloads straight away.

  1. Upload the PDF you need to sign

Drop the file on the box above or browse for it. PDFs up to 10 MB open instantly, including scans, and the first 20 pages are available to place a signature on.

  2. Click the page to place your signature

Click anywhere to set the signature box, then type your full name. The preview shows the signature exactly as it will appear, so you can move it or clear it until it looks right.

  3. Apply the signature and download

Press Apply signature. The signature is written into the PDF and your signed copy downloads as your-file_signed.pdf. Send it back, file it, or upload it wherever it is needed.

Is iLovePDF free?

iLovePDF has a free Basic plan with real limits: fewer tools, per-tool file-size caps (Sign PDF is capped at 50 MB) and web access only. Premium lifts the caps on other tools from $9 a month, or $5 a month billed yearly, though Sign PDF stays at 50 MB. Sending and signing through iLovePDF always needs the upload; this page does the signing locally and charges nothing.

Signing is one of the tools the free plan allows, so the honest answer is yes for occasional use — and no subscription is needed at all for the single PDF in front of you.

What iLovePDF actually costs

Indicative list prices, billed annually, per user — check iLovePDF for your region and seat count:

For a one-off signature this page is free; a subscription only pays off when you process PDFs daily.

iLovePDF login, and when you need it

To reach an existing account go to ilovepdf.com and choose Login. The account needs the email and password you registered with; nothing on this page asks for them.

Use the login when you need the files you stored, your plan details or the desktop and mobile apps. Use this page when you just need to sign and return a PDF now.

What people use it for

The same three steps cover most paperwork that arrives as a PDF: tenancy agreements, employment contracts and offer letters, NDAs, supplier terms, permission slips, consent forms and school or club documents. It is also the quickest way to sign a form you have already filled in, without printing it, signing with a pen and scanning it back to a computer.

Sign a PDF on any device

The tool runs in the browser, so there is no app to install and the signed file is produced on the device you are holding.

Sign a PDF on iPhone or iPad

Open the page in Safari, tap the upload box and pick the file from Files or iCloud Drive. Place the signature with a tap and press apply. Safari opens the finished PDF in its viewer — tap share, then Save to Files to keep it.

Sign a PDF on Android

Use Chrome, choose the PDF from Downloads or Drive, tap to place the signature and apply. The signed copy saves to Downloads, ready to share or attach.

Sign a PDF on Windows or Mac

Any current browser works on desktop. Drop the file in, place the signature, and the download lands in your normal downloads folder. No copy of Acrobat, Word or a PDF editor is needed.

Electronic signature or digital signature?

An electronic signature is any mark made electronically with the intent to sign — a typed name, a drawn squiggle, a tick in a box. It is what this tool produces, and it is accepted for most everyday agreements.

A digital signature is stricter: a cryptographic certificate is attached to the file, the document is sealed, and any later change breaks the seal. That is what you need when a contract says “qualified”, “certified” or “advanced electronic signature”. When a document only says “sign and return”, a typed e-signature is normally enough.

Free, and nothing is uploaded

Most online signing tools, iLovePDF included, upload your file to a server before you can touch it. Here the PDF is read in the browser, the signature is drawn on your own device and the signed copy is generated locally, so a contract never leaves the tab. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no page limit to unlock — the account step is optional and only keeps a copy for later.

Frequently asked questions

Is iLovePDF free?

iLovePDF has a free Basic plan with per-tool limits; Sign PDF is free up to 50 MB, and Premium lifts limits on other tools from $9 a month but keeps Sign PDF at 50 MB. This page is free with no account at all.

Can I sign a PDF without an iLovePDF account?

Yes. Signing needs no account here, and the file never leaves the browser.

How do I log in to iLovePDF?

Go to ilovepdf.com and choose Login, then use your account email and password. This page never asks for them.

How do I sign a PDF for free?

Drop the PDF in the box at the top, click the page where the signature should go, type your name and press apply. The signed file downloads immediately and nothing is charged.

Can I sign a PDF on my phone?

Yes. The tool works in Safari on iPhone and iPad and in Chrome on Android. Save the finished PDF with the share sheet on iOS or from Downloads on Android.

Do I need to create an account?

No. An account is optional and only matters if you want the signed copy kept so you can return to it or send it on.

Is my document uploaded to a server?

No. The PDF is opened in your browser, the signature is drawn locally and the finished file is built on your device.

Is a typed signature legally valid?

In most countries an electronic signature is valid for ordinary commercial and personal paperwork when both sides intend to sign. Some documents — wills, deeds, certain regulated contracts — still need witnesses or a qualified signature, so check the wording of the document.

Can I sign a scanned document?

Yes. A scan is a PDF like any other and the signature is placed on top of the page. Keep the scan sharp so the signature stays readable.

Why will my PDF not open?

Either it is over 10 MB, it is password protected, or it is damaged. Remove the password in your PDF reader first, or retry with a smaller file.

Does it add a watermark?

No. The only change to the file is the signature you placed.
